Hand Pain: Causes, Stretches and Treatment With Ortho Sudha Oil

Wrist Pain. Maybe it makes its arrival after a long day of typing at your computer. Or perhaps it comes after a round of tennis or workout session at the gym. No matter when you may feel it, we all suffer from wrist pain at some point or another.

If daily activities make your wrists and hands feel achy, taking a break from your work to stretch them throughout the day. This will help in relieving the discomfort.

It is very important to stretch the wrist flexors if you want to prevent or treat wrist pain. We keep our wrists in a flexed position for the most part of the day such as when we drive a car, hold a phone, or type on a computer. This is why we need to counter the shortening of the connective tissues (like the tendons) with stretching in extension. Stretching prevents the tissues from getting pulled asymmetrically, which leads to strain, a primary reason behind repetitive stress injury. If done regularly, these stretches will help in preventing tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Why Do We Get Hand Pain?

We live in the technologically advanced age of smartphone texting, video game controllers and computers - the keyboard, mouse and even the mouse pads on our laptops - it’s no wonder that so many people suffer from wrist and hand pain.

Our hands are made of dozens of small bones. This means that our hands can easily get sore. The wrist by itself has eight bones lined up, four on top, four below. All of these bones are connected by ligaments responsible for keeping the joints together, while allowing the hands to have a wide range of motion. The anatomy of the hand is intricate which means that if even one area in the wrist gets inflamed or injured, you will feel it.

Injuries or conditions that affect the hands can make normal tasks painful and difficult to do. Some people may even have trouble lifting a coffee cup or brushing their teeth without suffering through shooting pain through their arm. It may even force them to change the way they button a shirt, tye a shoelace and even sign your name.

The most common conditions that affect the wrist and hand are arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, ganglion cysts and injuries. Anyone can develop any of these conditions, especially carpal tunnel syndrome.

Stretches to Treat Hand and Wrist Pain

1.     Straighten your right arm out in front of you with the open palm facing upwards. Then use your left hand to pull your right hand down. This will stretch the palm and bottom of the wrist. Hold for a few seconds before letting go. Now switch hands and repeat.

2.     Reach your right arm out in front of you with the open palm facing downwards. Then use your left hand to pull your right hand and fingertips down further. This will stretch the top of your wrist. Hold for a few seconds before you release. Switch hands and repeat.

3.     Make a tight fist with your hands and then open them up as wide as possible. Let your fingers spread as far away from each other as possible. Let your hands stretch when you fan the fingers. Repeat 8-10 times.
